People experience dying as they experience living – through stories. Human beings are story-making creatures. We make sense of what is happening all around us and inside us through the tales we tell. We construct meaning through the stories we hear and those we tell about ourselves and others. Our culturally and personally constructed narratives allow us to know the world in which we live and to experience death and dying as both an individual and a collective story.

This innovative new book contributes to end-of-life understanding by sharing stories of individuals, families, and communities dealing with death and dying. The tales are told by health care providers from their direct practice experiences and from the patients and families themselves.  Each story is then considered from the diverse angles and perspectives of academics, service providers, family members, lawyers, economists and many others representing broad multi-disciplinary interest in the last stages of life.

End-of-Life Stories

This book examines issues confronted at the end of life as stories about individuals, families, communities, and society. Emphasizing the need for interdisciplinary approaches to end-of-life issues, the authors present real life patient cases that are followed by insightful responses and analyses from contributors from various disciplines.
